Nobody warned Esther nor sat her down to explain what the next few years would look like when she walked through the palace gates. One day she was an ordinary Jewish girl living under the roof of her older cousin. The next, she was queen of Persia, not because she campaigned for it or because she had a plan but because God had already decided that she needed to be in a room she could not have gotten into on her own and He needed someone to help her get there.
The man in the story of Esther that God used to help her get on the throne was Mordecai, and what he does for Esther is the quiet architecture behind everything else that happens.
Esther 4:13-14 NKJV "Do not think in your heart that you will escape in the king's palace any more than all the other Jews. For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"
That last line, who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this? Mordecai did not say it to flatter her, he said it because he believed it. He saw what she could not yet see about herself, that her position was not accidental, that her access was not coincidence, and that the God who placed her in that palace had done so with intention.
But before that famous moment, Mordecai had already been working on her behalf in ways she did not even know about. Esther 2:21 to 23 in the NKJV records that Mordecai uncovered a plot against the king's life, reported it to Esther, and Esther relayed it to the king in Mordecai's name. He exposed a threat she could not see coming. Mordecai watched the gates; he paid attention to what was happening around her while she was learning to navigate a life that was entirely new to her. He was the person standing in the gap when she could not stand there herself.
That is what a Mordecai does. A Mordecai is not just someone who encourages you, a Mordecai is someone who carries information you need, sees dangers you have not spotted, speaks truth into your identity when you are not sure of it yourself, and intercedes in moments you did not know to pray for. They are placed in your life by God, not by chance.
There are seasons in life when you feel deeply alone in what you are carrying. May be you are the first in your family to try something new. May be you are navigating a season that came without a manual. May be you have walked through loss or transition and find yourself in unfamiliar territory with no obvious guide, and in those seasons it can genuinely feel like God has left you to figure it out on your own. He has not.
He did not leave Esther to navigate a Persian palace without help. He placed Mordecai at the gate before she ever arrived. He thought ahead, He made provision before she could articulate the need. That is the nature of God's care, it tends to arrive before the crisis does, dressed as a person you have known for years.
The Mordecai in your life might already be there. That mentor who keeps checking in. That friend who speaks truth to you without sugarcoating it. That older woman in the church who always seems to say exactly the right thing at the right moment. The person who once told you something about yourself that you did not fully believe yet, but that you are still thinking about years later. God does not leave His people without covering, and He does not send you into your season empty-handed.
What Mordecai did for Esther carried eternal weight. The plot of Haman against the Jewish people was real, it was coordinated, and it was deadly and God's answer to it was not a military response. His answer was a woman who had been quietly positioned years in advance, guided by a man who believed in her purpose even when she did not fully see it herself. The deliverance of a nation flowed through one relationship. One Mordecai. One Esther. One open door.
Your life is not too small for that kind of significance. The season you are in right now, however ordinary it feels, may be exactly the preparation for something that will matter more than you currently understand. And the people God places around you in this season are not accidental. Pay attention to them, receive what they carry and let them speak.
GOD PLACED SOMEONE IN YOUR LIFE BEFORE KNOWING YOU WOULD NEED THEM.
Esther did go to the king, stepped into that throne room with her life on the line and what happened next was the unravelling of everything Haman had built. The very plot he had constructed, the very gallows he had erected, turned against him. Not because Esther was powerful on her own but because she moved in her moment, shaped by a voice that had been speaking into her life from the beginning. Mordecai saw what she was from the beginning and he helped her become what God always intended.
God has already sent someone like that into your life. May be they have already spoken and you have not yet received it. May be they are standing at the gate right now, watching, interceding, waiting for you to realise what you carry. This post is a reminder that you are not alone in your season. Your Mordecai will show up or has already shown up because God does not send you anywhere without preparation.
