You have been praying, reading your Bible, going to church, doing all the things you were told to do as a believer, and yet somewhere along the way, your dreams stopped feeling alive. To you, the prayers started bouncing off the ceiling, and the voice of God you once heard so clearly has gone completely still.
If you are in that season right now, you know exactly how unsettling it feels. It is not just silence. It is a particular kind of silence, the kind that makes you wonder if you said something wrong, or if God simply moved on to someone more worthy of His attention. But what if the silence is not what you think it is?
Throughout Scripture, some of the most faithful people God ever used walked through stretches of silence so deep they questioned everything. Job sat in his suffering with no divine explanation for what felt like an eternity. David hid in caves, writing Psalms that dripped with confusion and longing. The Prophet Habakkuk stood at his post and waited, with no visible sign that God was listening at all.
You are not the first person to feel this, and you are not abandoned. But understanding what the silence actually is may be what changes how you carry it.
"Truly You are a God who hides Yourself, O God of Israel, the Savior." Isaiah 45:15 (NKJV)
This verse is startling the first time you really sit with it. Isaiah was not speaking in despair, he was speaking in awe. He had just witnessed God doing something extraordinary in an unlikely way, through a foreign king named Cyrus, and his response was to recognise something profound about how God operates. God sometimes works and moves behind the curtain, in the unseen places, in ways that are invisible to us until the moment He wants to reveal comes. The silence you are sitting in right now is not a sign that God has stopped working. It may be the very season in which He is working the hardest, just not in the way you can currently see.
What The Silence Is Not
The first thing you need to settle in your heart is what the silence is not. It is not punishment. If you have given your life to God, His posture toward you is not one of withholding love because you got something wrong. Romans 8:1 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and silence is not condemnation wearing a different face.
It is not abandonment either. God does not walk away from His children in the middle of a process He started. Philippians 1:6 reminds us that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion. The silence is not the end of the work. It is often the middle of it, the part where the most essential things are being formed below the surface.
And it is not a sign that your prayers are not reaching Him. Prayer does not require a loud response to be received. Some of the most powerful moments in Scripture happened in quiet, in the stillness before the breakthrough, and in the night before the morning came.
"Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" Psalm 46:10 (NKJV)
This verse is an invitation, not an instruction to give up. Be still, not because nothing is happening, but because the One who holds your life is not panicking, and neither should you. To be still in a season of silence is an act of profound trust. It is telling God with your posture, even if not yet with your feelings, that you believe He is still God even when everything feels uncertain.
That is not easy because some days stillness will feel like the hardest thing you have ever tried to hold onto. But it is in that stillness that you begin to know Him in a new way, not just the God who speaks, but the God who is present even when the speaking stops.
The Waiting Room Is Not A Dead End
Think about the kind of waiting that happens before something significant. A seed buried in the ground looks like nothing is occurring from the outside, but underneath the soil, everything is shifting. Structure is forming, roots are going deeper and life is building itself in the dark.
Your silent season may be doing the same thing. It is not a pause on your purpose, it is often the very place your purpose is being rooted deeply enough to hold the weight of what is coming.
"For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry." Habakkuk 2:3 (NKJV)
Habakkuk wrote this standing at his watchtower, waiting for an answer he had not yet received but God did not rebuke him for asking. God met him in the waiting and gave him a word that has carried countless believers through seasons of silence ever since. That vision of yours that you are carrying, has an appointed time. It is never lost, neither is late nor forgotten. It is being kept and God has not given up on you. The quiet is not His way of telling you that your story is finished. It is often His way of preparing you for the next chapter, the one that will require more of you than the last one did. Hold on, for your appointed time will show up soon.
Something To Think About.
When did God last feel close to you, and what was different about that season compared to where you are now? Is there anything you have been avoiding sitting with in the quiet, something God may be trying to surface in the silence? What would it look like to trust God this week not because of how He feels, but because of who He has proven Himself to be?
Prayer.
Lord, the silence has been heavy and I will not pretend otherwise. I have looked for You and felt like I was searching in the dark. But today I choose to believe that You have not gone anywhere. I trust that You are working even when I cannot see it, that this quiet season has a purpose I do not yet fully understand. Hold me steady until the appointed time comes.
Challenge.
This week, choose one moment each day to sit in the silence intentionally rather than filling it. No music, no scrolling, no noise. Bring one honest question to God and leave space for Him to meet you there. You do not need to hear anything spectacular. Simply practice the posture of stillness and trust that He is already present in it.
